The composer provides his own text (English or German tr) for speaker with "trained voice of bass-baritone quality," seated in the orchestra, between the 1st & 2nd mvts, and between the 2nd & 3rd mvts. If conditions do not warrent, the speaker may be omitted. With speaker, add ca 1 minute to total duration.
Composed at MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, New Hampshire, USA, and dedicated to the memory of Marian MacDowell (wife of composer Edward MacDowell).
