Although classified in BWV as a cantata, this is actually a motet, and was probably performed out of doors at a burial service.
The 2 high horn parts are designated litui [plural of lituus]—archaic Roman brass instruments that no longer existed in Bach's time. Though horns are apparently intended, these parts are given to 2 cornets in the Breitkopf edition.
