The original incidental music to Alphonse Daudet's play was for:

Suite No.2 for full orchestra was prepared by Ernest Guiraud after Bizet's death. The Eulenburg is a text-critical edition. The Breitkopf edition (and Kalmus reprint) by Fritz Hoffmann is cued for performance by a minimum of 1 1 2 1 — 2 2 1 0 — str 4t. Guiraud's 2tp & 2crt parts are redistributed by Hoffmann among the 4tp in an unpredictable, though practical, manner. English horn part, consisting of 4 bars, is cued in the clarinet.
