This work, assembled over a period of years, offers a convoluted history. The earliest version of 1887-1888 included only five movements: 1. Introit et Kyrie; 2. Sanctus; 3. Pie Jesu; 4. Agnus Dei; 5. In paradisum.
The 1893 version added two more movements and various instruments; it may be considered the definitive expression of the composer’s wishes.
In
1899-1900 a version using a larger, more standard orchestra was prepared at the behest of the publisher Hamelle. While this version is the most commonly performed, there is little or no evidence that Fauré had a hand in preparing it.
The choral parts of the 1893 version were not changed in the subsequent orchestrations.
