Orchestra players must sing. Woodwind players (except flutes) each have 1 pencil & 1 elephant bell (or comparable inst). Concertmaster has pair of Tingsha chimes (which resemble finger cymbals). Vc & db: 1 chopstick or pencil per player. Timpanist covers 2sus cym, watergong, & glock as well as tmp. Pianist strums strings at times inside the instrument.
3 "stations" for soloist, who moves from one to another. Soloist must improvise, and in places may chant or sing.
An "optional section" in mvt III involves extra percussionists moving onto stage from the wings, improvising with soloist, and exiting again. This section, if used, adds 1' to the duration.
A version of the orchestral accompaniment, employing only traditional Chinese instruments and orchestrated by Simon Kong, is available from the publisher. It has been performed by several Chinese orchestras (in Taipei, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore) with Evelyn Glennie as soloist.
