Specific information available for subscribers.
This work is based on the cantata by Xian Xinghai, Yellow River (Huanghe), composed in 1939 for soloists, chorus and orchestra. The pianist Yin Chengzong wrote the new solo piano part, which he performed himself at the 1970 premiere of the new version in Beijing. The instrumentation and other revisions were made by a group of composers, including Chu Wanghua, Liu Zhuang, and Sheng Lihong, under the patronage of Jiang Qing (aka "Madame Mao," the wife of then-chairman of the Communist Party, Mao Zedong.)
Mvt 3 opens with a short but important solo for Chinese flute (playable on a standard Western flute).
1. Yellow River Boatmen's Song
2. Ode to the Yellow River
3. Wrath of the Yellow River
4. Defend the Yellow River
