This work exists in 5 versions. The chronology:
1. Original ballet for 13 instruments (1943-1944)
2. Suite (shortened version of the ballet) for 13 instruments (1944)
3. Suite (same music as no.2) for full orchestra (1945)
4. Nearly-complete ballet for full orchestra, orchestrated by the
composer in 1945, though not published until 1954.
5. A version for full orchestra of the complete ballet, musically
identical to no.1, completed by David Newman in 2016.
