Breitkopf ed. Peter Jost; Serenissima ed. Clinton F. Nieweg & Nancy M. Bradburd.
Often performed with full string sections. The part labeled "harmonica" was originally intended for glass harmonica; it is generally played on glockenspiel, or occasionally celesta.
Narrations are often used; humorous verses for that purpose have been supplied by various writers, including Ogden Nash (available from Brown), Peter Schickele (Presser), Loriot (in German, French, & English; Breitkopf), Charles & Denise Kirkland (Charles.Kirkland@valpo.edu), Bruce Adolphe (bruce.adolphe@gmail.com), and Jack Prelutsky (Random House). Other individuals and ensembles have their own proprietary verses (e.g., Martin Bookspan, or The Mum Puppet Theatre) which may be used only by those performers. Still others have been published as children's books (e.g., John Lithgow's scenario with verses for the New York City Ballet).
Although the music is in the public domain, none of the verses are; permissions must be negotiated in each case with the copyright holder.
