Publication history of this complex work, composed from 1910 to 1925, but not published complete for 40 more years; the publisher's nomenclature is followed:
Facsimile edition: "Facsimile" only in the sense that the movements are for the most part not engraved, but are reproductions of manuscript produced by the editors: Romulus Franceschini (mvts 1 & 2), Nicholas Falcone (mvt 3) and Theodore A. Seder (mvt 4). Preface by John Kirkpatrick, AMP, 1965.
Critical edition: A Charles Ives Society edition: James B. Sinclair, executive editor; William Brooks (mvt 1), James B. Sinclair (mvt 2), Kenneth Singleton (mvt 3), Wayne D. Shirley (mvt 4). An accompanying CD includes manuscript facsimiles, some from Ives, most from his copyist, a Mr. Reis, as well as a color-coded “Quotation Analysis.” AMP, 2011.
Performance edition: Prepared by Thomas M. Brodhead on the basis of the "critical edition." This is the only practical edition for performance; see the following entry. AMP, 2012.
