A "Distant Choir Ensemble" [hp, 5vn] is drawn from main body (mvts 1, 4); the harp is never on stage. Also called for: an optional "ether organ," for which an ondes martenot (or failing that, a synthesizer or a theremin) might be a suitable replacement.
"Performance Edition" (score and parts) for this extraordinarily complex work newly prepared (2012) by Thomas M. Brodhead. The score includes a dozen very helpful essays by the editor, such as a "Survival Guide," "Where Additional Conductors Might Be Employed," and "Checklist for Orchestra Librarians."
The score and updated revisions of the essays may be viewed at:
https://ives-fourth-symphony.com. This website, maintained by Thomas Brodhead, is a rich repository of invaluable information, and is constantly being updated.
Although this Performance Edition is based on the 2011 Ives Society "Critical Edition," ed. James B. Sinclair, the latter is not intended for performance. The Brodhead Performance Edition is the only recommended orchestral material.
