The composer provides his own text (English or German tr) for speaker with "trained voice of bass-baritone quality," seated in the orchestra, between the 1st & 2nd mvts, and between the 2nd & 3rd mvts. Composed at MacDowell Colony, Peterborough, New Hampshire, USA, and dedicated to the memory of Marian MacDowell (wife of composer Edward MacDowell).
