[Not to be confused with the similarly-named ballet La Sylphide, composed by Herman Løvenskjold.]
This ballet was created in 1907 by choreographer Michel Fokine as
Chopiniana, set to Chopin piano music as previously orchestrated by Glazunov in an 1893 suite of that same name (q.v., under Glazunov). It was retitled Les Sylphides in 1909 for a production of Serge Diaghilev's Ballet Russes, using new orchestrations by Liadov, Taneyev, Tcherepnin, and Stravinsky. Modern productions usually use one of the following orchestrations (below).
N.B. An old orchestration previously offered by Kalmus, and purporting to preserve the Diaghilev orchestrations, is deficient in many ways and should not be used. It has been withdrawn by Kalmus but may still lurk undetected in various collections.
