Handel's original performance used 24ob, 12bn, unknown numbers of contrabassoons and serpents, 3hn, 3tp, and 3 sets of timpani. The strings were added later by the composer and may be considered optional.
The Kalmus edition (ed. Max Seiffert) uses no cbn. Another separate Peters edition (ed. Robert A. Boudreau) uses no strings and calls for one or more snare drums in addition to timpani.
