Much of the work consists of open un-metered passages in proportional (or visual) notation. There are many quotations from other composers; the bulk of Act II is a transcription of the Adagio from Mozart's K.287 Divertimento. The composer provides a lengthy Preface explaining the surreal aspect of the work, and giving specific suggestions for performance.
This work may also be performed by a small orchestra, using string sections and 4 horns rather than 2.
