The composer apparently had 5 clarinetists (including E-flat clarinet and bass clarinet) in mind, but the parts can be readily covered by four players; the 3rd clarinet part must be taken by the E-flat clarinetist and bass clarinetist alternately (a single bcl note has to be omitted in mvt 1, bar 37). The bcl is mostly in B-flat, though there are about 40 bars for bcl in A in the 6th mvt.
Universal edition by Karl Heinz Füssl, 1990.
The early piano-vocal score prepared by Mahler does not entirely agree with the orchestral version; use instead the piano-reduction by Erwin Stein (Boosey & Universal).
A re-orchestration of the 1st mvt by Colin Matthews (2012), for the same forces, made for balance purposes, is available from Universal Edition.
