Bach, Johann Sebastian
1685-1750
(b Eisenach, 21 March 1685; d Leipzig, 28 July 1750). German
Cantata No.96 (Herr Christ, der einge Gottessohn) <1724>
chorus solos SATB
Specific information available for subscribers.
Score calls for flauto piccolo, by which a sopranino recorder in F is probably intended (the modern piccolo did not yet exist). In a later performance (probably 1734) Bach replaced this instrument with a violino piccolo (in that case, a transverse flute is still needed for the 3rd mvt).
Horn used only to strengthen the cantus firmus; in performances around 1744, Bach used a trombone for this purpose.
