Originally selected organ works; compiled & arr. Franzpeter Goebels (1985). Title intended to parallel the composer's Vier ernste Gesänge (Four Serious Songs), an otherwise unassociated work.
The arranger suggests performing all 5 mvts in the following order: Nos.1 & 2 [as a prelude and fugue in A minor] followed by nos.3 4, & 5 [two chorale preludes plus the original Isaac song on which the chorale is based].
He also raises the possibility of adding a woodwind instrument to the chorale melody in no.4.
