Respighi, Ottorino
1879-1936
(b Bologna, 9 July 1879; d Rome, 18 April 1936). Italian
Pini di Roma, P.141 (Pines of Rome) <1923–1924>
Specific information available for subscribers.
Bcl (otherwise in B-flat) is in A in the 3rd mvt.
Buccina was a metal signaling instrument of ancient Rome; Respighi calls for the parts to be played by "flicorni" (= flugelhorns). Actually the soprano and tenor buccine work fine on flugelhorns, while the 2 bass instruments are best played on euphoniums or baritone horns. They appear only in the last mvt, and are often stationed in three groups out in the hall, on the sides and rear of the audience. Buccine may be substituted for by cues present in the orchestral brass plus an additional 5th & 6th hn and a 4th tp; of course this practice sacrifices much of the drama of the offstage brass.

There is also a brief but prominent solo for "tromba interna" (offstage trumpet, as distant as possible); this could be played by one of the flugelhorn players, though of course on trumpet (not flugelhorn).
In the main orchestra, the score shows a 4th tbn, but the relevant part is labeled "Tuba bassa," and is often played on tuba. Nightingale recording supplied with rental materials from Ricordi (Boosey). Luck's offers this: "Respighi suggested that the commercial recording issued by the Concert Record Gramophone Company as R6105 be used. To this day the publisher supplies that particular recording with the score, although the medium has changed through the years from the original 78-RPM record to LP, cassette, and compact disc." https://adp.library.ucsb.edu/index.php/matrix/detail/1000017685/15507L-Song_of_a_nightingale_no._2
