This second overture was composed shortly before the composer's death; it is an entirely different work from original B minor overture.
Although the title page states that it was "arranged after the original score by Felix Mottl," it is believed that Franz Liszt actually orchestrated the work (S.352 in the Searle index). Mottl revised, shortened, and reorchestrated the entire opera in the early 1880s, and that is probably the arrangement referred to; thus the present work may be considered Mottl's arrangement of Liszt's orchestration of Cornelius's second overture.
