Originally intended to be one movement of a symphony, but recast by the composer as the first movement of a piano concerto. Two other mvts were completed and orchestrated for piano & orchestra by Sergey Taneyev, and published as Andante & Finale, op.79, (q.v. under Tchaikovsky's name).
