Wilhelm Fitzenhagen (1848-1890), the celebrated cellist to whom the work is dedicated, reordered most of the variations and recomposed a few passages. This is the version most commonly known and performed.
No rehearsal numbers or letters in the score or parts.

Original 24 bars; Fitzenhagen — 40 bars (8 bars repeated, 8 more bars repeated, 8 bar bridge to the next variation).
