This work is best-known and most frequently performed not in this original version, but in an arrangement by Wilhelm Fitzhagen, the dedicatee—a version, incidentally, that the composer disliked. To distinguish the versions, check the length of the statement of the theme:
Original—24 bars; Fitzhagen—40 bars (8 bars repeated, 8 more bars repeated, 8 bar bridge to the next variation).
