The above instrumentation includes an offstage banda:
brass 12 2 2 0
Banda parts are cued in the onstage brass. If these cues are played onstage, only brass 8 4 4 2 is required. If onstage players leave the stage to play the banda parts, and all doublings are eliminated, then brass 8 4 5 2 is necessary.
3rd cl also plays C-cl as well as bcl.
It is said that if a suitable heckelphone player was not available, Strauss, when he conducted, would substitute a bass oboe, or simply omit the part.
