In the opera, the overture leads directly into the first number, thus necessitating a special ending for concert performance. There are three concert-endings:
(1) a 13-bar ending by Mozart himself, though it is unclear whether this ending should be inserted at bar 282 or 286 of the original overture; either option is feasible. A new Breitkopf (ed. Bastiaan Blomhert) allows either possibility; Bärenreiter inserts the special ending at bar 286; Kalmus A6417 (reprint of Peters) starts the insert at bar 282.
(2) a 9-bar ending beginning at bar 275 of the original, attributed to Johann Anton André, though that attribution has been questioned. The “André” ending is found in an earlier Breitkopf edition (reprinted Kalmus A1735).
(3) a more elaborate ending by Ferruccio Busoni, substantially longer, and requiring 3tbn; see subsequent entry.
