This work was left incomplete upon the composer's death. The completion of the work by Mozart's pupil, Franz Xaver Süssmayr, was accepted for nearly two centuries as the standard version. More recently, attempts have been made to improve upon Süssmayr, and/or return to Mozart's original intention.
